Happy May Day! Can you believe it? We are beginning our third month. I thought I would give you a brief description of the town of Manteo. The island is not large but not greatly populated. The new part of town is spread out with the chain stores like every other town in the USA. But go to the old part of town and it is a different place. It centers itself around the harbour. The shops face the harbour, with a boardwalk between the shops and the water. In the evening when most of the stores are closed people with their dogs come to the board walk and let the dogs go. The city has even built a small dock that is under water by a couple of inches so the dogs can jump in and out of the water by themselves, and they do. The bridge that goes over the water to the Historic Park is used by the kids to jump off of and then swim to the boardwalk and climb up a ladder provided by the city. We saw them do it and seem to enjoy doing it too. There is a large covered pavilion that sticks out into the bay
which can be used for picnics, weddings, whatever. I saw a lady using it as her private exercise area.
There is also a very scenic but short light house on the island. One of the 5 that are on the outer banks. After you leave the waterfront you come to the houses. Go back to the 1950's or even earlier.
Well maintained lawns, friendly front porches, beautiful flowers, white picket fences. The streets are narrow and it feels very welcoming. I am very impressed with Manteo, and North Carolina. It is
sure different from Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. The movie last night was a step back to the 50's. Mom took the money, son sold the popcorn, drinks, and candy. The movie started late because the son had to sell everyone their stuff before he could run up to the projection room. A lot of
people came in but sat in the back and visited until the movie started and then there wasn't a peep
from anyone. The wind starting howling today and is suppose to stay with us for several days.
